HSI’s Active Violence Emergency Response Training (AVERT) has a new name—Active Violence Immediate Response Training (AVIRT). This change reflects our enhanced focus on the Immediate Responder — individuals who take swift, decisive action before professional help arrives. 

The new name highlights a key reality: in an active violence situation, seconds matter. Before professional first responders arrive, bystanders — or Immediate Responders — can make a critical difference in saving lives. AVIRT equips participants with the knowledge, hands-on skills, and confidence to act quickly in those important first moments. 

In addition to the name change, AVIRT includes updated course materials and scenario-based training that reflect current best practices and lessons learned from our experienced authorized Instructors and subject matter experts.  

While the program’s objective has not changed, its approach has been sharpened to better prepare people to become immediate responders if active violence occurs. AVIRT continues to deliver the quality, credibility, and practicality that instructors and organizations have come to expect from HSI—now with a name that more clearly defines its lifesaving purpose.

As an HSI Instructor, you're not only teaching lifesaving skills — you’re also guiding your students through the full certification process. That includes being their go-to contact for any questions or issues related to their certification cards. 

Here are a few common situations where your support is important — and how to handle them: 

Student Name Spelling Correction 
If a student notices their name is misspelled on their certification card, you’ll need to log in to the HSI Portal, locate their record, and make the necessary edit. Once corrected, you can reissue the card digitally to ensure they have an accurate version. 

Lost or Missing Certification Card 
In cases where a student’s card was deleted or issued under the wrong course, you may need to fully reissue the certification. Be sure to document the reason for the reissue and follow the appropriate steps in the Portal to maintain compliance and ensure accuracy. 

Resend a Digital Certification Card 

Students may misplace their digital card or not receive it due to an incorrect email address. If that happens, you can resend the card through the HSI Portal. Just verify or update the student’s email address and select the option to resend the digital certification. 

Your attention to these details helps maintain the integrity of the certification process and ensures your students receive the professional, reliable experience they expect from an authorized HSI Instructor.
