    HSI Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)

We recently released the updated version of Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) with traditional classroom or blended learning options.

The updated HSI BBP training program can be used to help satisfy the requirements of the U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030, and it replaces all previous versions of ASHI, MEDIC First Aid, and EMS Safety Services Bloodborne Pathogens programs.

Please note: All student certification cards (print and digital) for the ASHI, MEDIC First Aid, and EMS Safety Skills Bloodborne Pathogens programs must be issued by 12/31/23.

      Regulatory Compliance:

Increase in quality assurance complaints for outdated certification cards

HSI has experienced a significant increase in the volume of quality assurance complaints regarding the issuance of outdated ASHI, EMS Safety, and MEDIC First Aid certification cards.

        worksafe_compliant

HSI does not recognize any certification card issued to a student who successfully completed an outdated, discontinued version of an HSI training program (Terms and Conditions for Complaints and Credential Inquiries, TCAM, Sec. 2, pg. 11, #4.).

Unless specifically stated otherwise, one hundred twenty (120) days after an HSI, ASHI, EMS Safety, MEDIC First Aid certification card has been replaced by an updated certification card, the previous version of the certification card is considered outdated. Training Centers, Authorized Instructors and ITs may not issue outdated certification cards.

HSI is advising state authorities not to recognize ASHI, MEDIC First Aid, or EMS Safety certification cards from an outdated, discontinued program that are issued after December 31, 2022, for the purposes of regulatory compliance.

Notice for Training Centers Offering Mariner Training and Certification for USCG Regulatory Compliance

The National Maritime Center (NMC) is a unit of the United States Coast Guard (USGC) under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. NMC has been granted authority to regulate the training and licensing of U.S. mariners, guided by the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations Title 46, Chapter I, Subchapter B.

A current first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification is required for a Merchant Mariner Credential. HSI Adult First Aid | CPR AED (Version 9.0) was approved by the USGC/NMC for this purpose effective May 1, 2022.  However, there are specific conditions for USCG acceptance that apply to every HSI approved Training Center and authorized instructor or instructor trainer.

A USCG approved HSI Recognition of Participation document must be issued to each mariner who successfully completes the class, along with a HSI Adult First Aid | CPR AED certification card.

USCG marine inspectors and/or NMC staff will not accept the HSI Adult First Aid | CPR AED certification card as meeting the regulatory requirements for a Merchant Mariner Credential if it is not accompanied by the USCG approved HSI Recognition of Participation document.

We have been advised by the NMC on multiple occasions that mariners are not receiving the USCG approved and required HSI Recognition of Participation document. This document is included within the USCG Regulatory Compliance Requirements for Training U.S. Mariners.

These requirements have been published in the Training Center Administrative Manual (TCAM) for ASHI and MEDIC First Aid and have been posted in the national approvals database in Otis for at least the past 12 years. If you are new to HSI or were accustomed to the previous EMS Safety process for USCG approval, please read these requirements carefully.

Please remember that HSI approved Training Centers and authorized instructors are required to comply with all applicable local, state, provincial, federal laws and administrative rules governing the approval, delivery, and administration of occupationally required training.

Q&A: Why did a new Instructor become inactivated after my TC activates them with Reciprocity?

            FundamentalQuestions

All new Instructors must take the HSI Reciprocity course within 60 days of when your Training Center (TC) processes their application. On the application, please be sure to provide the Instructor's email (not the TC Director's email).

The Instructor will receive an email from info@hsi.com one day after the application is processed with a link to the HSI Reciprocity course. They must open the link and launch the course. Periodic reminder emails with a link to the course will be sent to the Instructor if the course is not completed.

If the Reciprocity course is not completed within 60 days, the system will automatically inactivate the Instructor.

If this happens, the Instructor has two options. They may:

            1. Find a previous email from info@hsi.com to access the Reciprocity course link and complete the course.
              - OR -
            2. Call HSI Client Services, ask for a link to be emailed, open the email and complete the Reciprocity course.

After the HSI Reciprocity course is completed the Instructor will be reactivated.
